AUGUST 2015 : EASTERN EUROPE : European Peace Walk : Day 17 : Zagorska Sela, Croatia - Brezice, Slovenia (35 kms - 5 kms by car, then 81/2 hours walking)

Distance travelled : 445 kms

Big day as set out in the EPW directions. Some big climbs, spectacular views, steep descents, immaculate Slovenian villages and the countryside bursting with produce.

Breakfast in the dining room in this grand old house.

                                       Something interesting in every corner.

             Leaving Croatia.

            Entering Slovenia.

Views up into the hills, where we would soon be climbing!

Everything as neat as a pin with some classy surprises.

Locals quickly redirected us up a small laneway, when we walked past.

Up on the first ridge and some luscious vegetables growing in individual gardens

           Up we climbed...

           Some minor road walking.

Views of Slovenian farming communities in the distance far below.

Some bush bashing with stinging nettles attacking us at every opportunity.

           Huge thistles and prickly critters...

             Gluttonous slugs...

            Rest shelters with eco-toilets...

Then down, down, down we went...

At the base of the mountain we emerged into acres and acres of vineyards.

         Gigantic pumpkin crops...

                                             Beautiful gardens.

           And finally, somewhere for refreshments.

After a satisfactory rest we walked the final 7 kilometres into Brezice as storm clouds gathered.

First impressions. Another fairytale town. Is this Rapunzel's tower? No, a 1914 water tower.

The Brezice Castle built in the sixteenth century on the site of an eleventh century fortress.
             It is now a museum.

The forecourt is often used for concerts.

Our accommodation tonight, across from the castle, is in a modern youth hostel.

Double rooms, towels, sheets, washers, dryers, bar downstairs and breakfast provided.

Dinner at a pub, The Rafters. Trout, meat skewers, salad, wine, ice cream for 33 euros.

With raspberry sorbet and Belgium chocolate for dessert.
