AUGUST 2015 : EASTERN EUROPE : European Peace Walk : Day 5 : Nyarliget, Hungary

Distance travelled so far : 89 kms

A day in Nyarliget, waiting for our group to catch up. A hot day, again high 30s. A rest day for Ros'
feet.

Our pension. 12 euros a night.

Lizzie bringing us a welcome cup of tea.

8.30 start to walk into the next town of Fertod. 5 kms away.

                                                   A sunflower for Thelma's birthday

A beautiful waymarker alerting us to the fact that something special lay ahead.

The small town of Fertod is the home of the Esterhazy-Kastely, created by Prince Nikolaus "the
magnificent" in the 18th century. It is in Baroque - Rococo style and as fine as any royal court.

The palace in all its glory.

          The main entrance.

            Some royal well-wishers.

              Tea at the cafe.

The Joseph Hayden music festival is about to begin. Rehearsals were in full swing.

            Ladies in waiting

                                       Gentlemen too.

The composer, Joseph Hayden, was a great friend of Prince Nikolaus and he spent much time
here as the resident royal musician. In fact, the town became a cultural centre  hosting grand balls, concerts ands theatrical performances in its heyday.

         Local market.

        Colourful ceramic garden sculptures.

A local bar for lunch.  A welcome rest and protection from the sun and heat.

Two of our group, Jody and Cecile (from Perth) have decided to buy bikes to finish the walk, hoping to
avoid the long days of heat. It will be interesting to see how they go.

Gorgeous dinner in Ferod, celebrating Thelma's birthday.

Lizzie ferried us all to dinner. What a champion!

Hello again! That heat looks like a real challenge. Hope the wonderful sights make up for it. As Australians you should be telling the locals that you would call this a cool and pleasant day back home... then amaze them with tall tales of crossing the Simpson Desert in the middle of summer in bare feet and no water etc...make sure you throw in a big croc story too! Best wishes for a cool change from Nick & Wendy.
