AUGUST 2015 : EASTERN EUROPE : European Peace Walk : Day 9 : Narda, Hungary - Szentpeterfa, Hungary (23 kms - 7 hours with stops)

Distance travelled : 190 kms

Thunderstorms overnight and suddenly the heatwave is over. We had 23 degrees predicted today with showers, which didn't eventuate while we were walking. We are still walking on mainly flat farmland but with hills surrounding us. Still moving in and out of Austria and Hungary. EPW have organised accommodation in Hungary as it is much cheaper. Everything is very cheap for excellent food and service.

Leaving the community centre this morning at 6.30 am after breakfast.

Pretty views of small towns and farmland.

Some cattle, rare in our walk so far.

Muddy fields after the heavy lifting overnight rain.

          Squelch, schelch!

We took a detour to see the Iron Curtain Museum.

Unfortunately our guide was not there but Jason, who did the walk last year, as well said the
            tour was fascinating.
We have heard various stories from our hosts along the way of the 1956 revolution.

Very easy pleasant walking with scenic views in the cooler weather.

Emma reading our directions, with feeling.

An unexpected arrival of a stork in a field nearby.

Small attractive townships, with not enough cafes!

            A rest stop in Austria.

                                                             Walking by the River Pinka.

Memorials to the 1956 Revolution along the river.

Some graphic representation of events that occurred along the river.

At last our destination, Szentpeterfa or Petrovo Selo.
This is the Croatian name for the town.
As in Narda last night, there is significant Crostian population here.

We are staying in a local school.

         ........on stretchers.

The only internet spot in Szentpeterfa - in the bus shelter across from the pub.

King Stephen, patron saint of Hungary, represented in the local church.
His saint's day is on Thursday, 20 th August.

The hub of the town, Co op and restaurant, where we had dinner.

Raymond from the mayor's office showed us around the town.
He gave us a wonderful insight into the town's history and shared a meal with us.
