AUGUST 2015 : EASTERN EUROPE : European Peace Walk : Day 7 : Sopronkovesd, Hungary - Koszeg, Hungary (30 kms - 9 hours with stops)

Distance travelled so far : 141 kms

An early start for our gym accommodation in Sopronkovesd.

5.30 am opening of a fruit shop next door. Perfect breakfast.

Within minutes we had crossed through an old checkpoint from Hungary into Austria.

Beautiful sunrise as we enter the forest.

Lost for a time but jubilant when we found a waymarker to confirm that we were going in
          the right direction.

Out of the forest into the fields, pleased with our progress and we were moving in the right way.

Mark's trusty walking pole, dead after 9 years' of faithful service.

Thermal springs. Tempted but we heard it was expensive and we had a long day's walk.

Rainstorm impending. Thunder and lightening so we found a great cafe in Lutzmannsburg.

Bit hit and miss with our orders but delighted with the result.

Austrian towns so much more decorative than the austere Hungarian.

                                              Another interesting house..

                                                Fabulous ceramics.

In the next town we were invited to join in a parish farewell for a loved priest.

Successful foraging today. Apples, pears and blackberries.

Crossing back into Hungary through fruit orchards.

Our first major climb, through a treed area and down into Koszeg.

Our accommodation is an old army barracks now a school for the disabled.

Our building with ghosts of young soldiers of WW2 and now a school for the disabled,
            many wards of the state.

Ben, our host, whose is a local and teacher at the school and thinks that Koszeg is the 'jewel in Hungary's crown'.

Our room, basic and full of history.

The main church in the attractive square.

Children cooling off in the heat.

A service in progress. Beautiful timpanium and stained glass windows

Attractive gateway, Heroes' Gate, commemorating war dead and in 1932, marking the 400th
anniversary of Suleiman's and the Turkish army's withdrawal from the city. To this day, church bells in Koszeg ring an hour before noon to mark the withdrawal in 1532 and to celebrate the city's victory.

                                              Turkish towers.

Wonderful meal together. Deer, salmon, stuffed chicken breasts.
With drinks only 10 euros a head. Euros and local currency are
                                  interchangeable.

hello walkers!

your journey appears to be getting more fascinating by the day! Glad you had some shaded areas to walk in for your steeper climb.

the buildings are so very beautiful.

i can undestand how easy it may be to get lost on you way sometimes. the red arrow on the rocks was a sneaky one.

love to you all and keep on trackin'!!!!!
