AUGUST 2019 : IRELAND : DAY 6 : Kerrykeel, Donegal

A rainy morning in Donegal with the countryside looking as green as ever

First stop today was at Portsalon for a dip in the chilly waters

We visited a modest stately home, Glebe House, donated to the Irish state in 1993 by the English artist, Derek Hill (1916-2000). We were able to join an informative guide and view the eclectic painting collection in the residence.

The stables are now a modern gallery and cafe

We also found an old mill museum at Newmills. Formerly a very profitable corn and oat mill. We enjoyed the tour, documentary and exhibition very much.

It was also a flax mill producing linen products, particularly during WW2 when the fabric was used for uniforms, parachutes and covers for fighter plane fuselages. The industry declined with the introduction of synthetics.

Misty rain over Mulroy Bay where we are staying. We walked 15 minutes to Kerrykeel to a new restaurant, The Narrow Quarter, for dinner.

The obligatory pints in the pub across the road before walking home

Big Irish football match today between Mayo and Dublin. Mayo the underdogs were the local favourites but unfortunately couldn’t defeat the professional Dublin outfit. Strange game as it is a cross between basketball, soccer and Aussie Rules.
