AUGUST 2019 : IRELAND : DAY 3 : Galway - Westport - Newport

We said goodbye to Miriam, who was returning to housesit in Madrid and left Menlo, a small historic settlement on the outskirts of Galway.

First stop north today was at Ballintubber Abbey, which has a history dating back to the 400 AD. After many years of being a ruin the abbey has been fully restored and commissioned some creative projects.

A beautiful set of the Stations of the Cross by a German artist in the 1960s.

St Patrick’s ministry began in this area in the 5th century. He spent 40 days and nights on a local mountain, Croagh Patrick, which has become a place of pilgrimage.

Lunch in the beautiful town of Westport.

Many kilometres of old railway lines have now been transformed into a bike and walking track. Today we set off from Westport to Newport - 12 km.

A flat walk bordered by farmland, wildflowers and scenic views

Newport is a tiny village, also with a lot of character

John had arranged for us all to stay with his cousin in their restored home in the main street. The lower floor is their cafe and auctioneer/real estate business.

We enjoyed a family barbecue in their garden with pints to follow at the pub across the street

The former railway viaduct lit up at night.
