AUGUST 2019 : CANADA : DAY 6 : Toronto

We are really enjoying Toronto, particularly the summer weather and the city grid system, which makes exploring much easier. We plan our day, plot the points in maps.me on Mark’s mobile so everything is accessible and walk everywhere.
At last we have found good coffee and a light breakfast menu at Aroma, thanks to a suggestion of Irv’s last night.

We set off this morning from our hotel, past City Hall towards the port, through a tunnel, illustrated with Indigenous elders.

We enjoyed an hour cruise around the islands off Toronto. They were originally connected to the city by sandbanks but during storms in the late 19 th century the sandbanks were washed away. Some of the islands are inhabited and others are nature reserves. We had some more impressive views of the Toronto skyline.

Afterwards we walked along the shore to the St Lawrence Markets.

The markets are very popular and have an extensive range of products. One section in a large marquee was for local market farmers.

We passed the dog park.

Lunch at a Japanese restaurant in Chinatown.

A visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario.

I had heard about the Group of Seven. Canadian artists who formed an alliance in 1920 dedicated to promoting Canadian landscape painting.

There were some interesting sculptures, including a whole gallery of Henry Moore’s work.

The most popular exhibition today was the work of a young avant-garde artist, Brian Jungen, who uses consumer products for his sculptures. This time it was backpack totem poles and sports gear modelled into traditional Indigenous masks and artefacts.

Tonight we walked up towards the attractive University district, which is also the fashion district with all the big label stores. We had been recommended an Indian restaurant, The Host, which was full of atmosphere and authentic Indian food.

There is a constant line of patrons queuing to check in to the hotel in the lobby. Today there was an interactive robot entertaining the troops as they stood in line.
