A five and a half hour flight to Halifax from Dublin on budget WestJet. On time and uneventful.
A welcome lunch in Halifax to while away the five hour transit stop. Misty and cool. 20oC.
We arrived in Ottawa about 5 pm having gained five hours in our westward journey today. It was sunny and a balmy 25oC. We are here to stay with Mark’s brother, Piers, and his partner, Richard, who are on posting here for three years. They live in an apartment in the centre near the large Fairmont Hotel.
It is a modern apartment block with restaurants and a roof garden.
The most striking feature of Ottawa is the Rideau Canal, which was opened in 1832, and runs for 202 kms from the city to Lake Ontario, with a system of locks. The city developed around the canal. In winter it becomes a long skateway enjoyed by thousands of skaters, including Richard.
And this is what it looks like in February..
They have a brown Labrador, Benson, who benefits from the parks near the apartment.
As we are so central, the main galleries, public buildings and museums are in walking distance.
We walked to a favourite restaurant of Piers and Richard for dinner enjoying the warm evening and the general ambience of the city. They are really loving their time here in Canada.
