OCTOBER 2017 : SPAIN : CÓRDOBA : DAY 2

After breakfast we walked down towards the river and discovered an inviting courtyard (patio) in the Antigua de Santa Clara. It is now a performance space. We noticed a concert there tomorrow night, which we will  hopefully attend. The anticipated temperature was 33o.

Further along another sign to Casa de las Cabezas. A home- patio with roots in the Middle Ages.

With artefacts from its Moorish and Christian past inhabitants - including an internal well.

Unable to join an English tour today we walked across the Roman bridge and visited the Torre de la Calahorra museum.Loosely the life and times of the Moors in Córdoba. The tower itself was erected as s defensive gate in the 14th century.

There were theological, scientific, architectural and cultural displays.

Impressive views from the tower, including a water wheel devised by the Moors to aid agriculture.

Nearby is the large alcazar or castle built by King Alfonso X1 in 1328.

A grand building with a sad past. It is now just a shell but after its palace glory days served as a centre for Inquisition atrocities and as a prison, until the  Town Council bought it in the 20th century. In the main meeting area several Roman mosaics have been re-established there, removed from their original site in a local plaza, some dating back to the 2nd century.

The Town Council have been responsible for developing the beautiful gardens, a cool oasis in the Spanish heat.

There is a large section of Córdoba's old town that is called La Juderia, the Jewish Quarter, but when we eventually found the Synagogue it was very underwhelming - small area, crumbling plaster and no recognition of its past status. It provided quite an adventure for us as we weaved in and out of laneways trying to find it.

Lunch was just inside the old city wall, ordering Córdoba's speciality cold tomato soup, topped with egg, cheese and bacon.

Cold tomato soup - Salmorejo Cordobes.

Dinner in the plaza near the main shopping precinct. Lovely to see families out, older couples enjoying a stroll. Such a healthy community tradition.
