A relaxing day on the whole today to savour our auberge and the surrounding desert area. Quite a few people were up early walking the Erg Chebbi dunes, just behind our hostal, and to see the spectacular sunrise.
Finches active in the early morning
Off on another cultural experience
We left about 10 am to drive to the small village of Khamlia - 15 minutes. It is a small village, populated by Gnaoua (from Sudan) and Berber tribes people. Originally slaves, brought by caravans from central and Western Africa, when they were emancipated they became nomads but in the 1950s and 60s they settled here. They live by farming crops and livestock and now by tourism, having established a Gnaouan music school to preserve their heritage. They perform continuously every morning, so that tourists can enjoy their fabulous music - very meditative.
First we were welcomed with mint tea.
About six performers entertained us with a very animated musical performance
Back to the auberge, temperatures rising - about 30o.
A swim
Lunch - fresh salad and a Berber omelette with juicy mandarins to finish.
Then our desert experience began...
