A short 15 min train ride from San Fernando to Cadiz, a lively city of 100,000 residents, on a narrow peninsular. It has been an important port from Roman times and particularly with trade with the Americas from the sixteenth century.. Beautiful plazas with palm trees and attractive buildings.
We just wandered around enjoying the atmosphere, familiarising ourselves with the general layout of the city. First stop was the Cathedral Plaza.
A local bodega serving a ‘rough’ sherry...very popular in these parts...not to everyone’s taste.
Then a stunning seafood lunch..starring a whole baked red snapper.
A walk through plazas with so many families enjoying being together on the weekend
Along the boardwalk we saw lots of nests and parrots, originally pets from the Americas but now released and causing havoc in the area as they have multiplied so prolifically.
The main swimming beach, Playa de la Caleta, with Castillo de la Catalina at the northern end.
A walk back along the shore to the train.
Various craft in the harbour. High speed catamaran - Australian made! A tall ship, possibly moored to celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ first journey to discover the Americas. A public holiday here on Thursday to celebrate.
Riding home on the train, there are many channels in the marshland. Salt water goes into these channels at high tide, evaporates and leaves a salt deposit to be harvested. A method used in Roman times.
A very welcome sunset swim at San Fernando’s beach.
