OCTOBER 2017 : MOROCCO : ESSAOUIRA - MARRAKECH : DAY 14

Sunrise on the rooftop of our hotel in Essaouira. Call to prayer at 6am. Stereo effect here with two mosques, 500m from each other, competing..but one a few minutes out..rather discordant and an interesting start to the day.

Goodbye to our beautiful terrace room

Trolleys loaded to take our bags from the old medina to our bus outside the walls

The attractive harbour.

Various modes of transport on the 3 hour trip back to Marrakech

A dry plain but sheep and goats grazing on the bare minimum

Arrival in the cosmopolitan tourist capital of Marrakech

Our hotel

With pool

Time for a delicious sushi lunch before we set off on our afternoon tour

Our local guide showing us the Koutoubia Minaret, the tallest in Morocco at 77m.

The Jewish Quarter at the entrance to the Medina.

Local stalls

A session with a herbalist..every health problem solved

Farewell to our skilful driver, Jamal, and congratulations to Rabia for conducting such a fascinating tour so efficiently.

The very discreet entry to the Bahia Palace located in the medina near the Jewish Quarter. It was in use from 1859-1873.

The fabulously tiled courtyards with exotic fruits and plants.

Gorgeous decorated doors and windows

Detail in the ceilings

Small Berber Museum, collected by the Dutchman, Bert Flint.

The museum is housed in an old Riad- style apartment

Bert Flint spoke to us about the importance of the collection

Heavy doors guaranteed to protect inhabitants

A Berber tent with beautifully woven carpets

Traditional slippers

Jewellery

For those of us with any energy left there was the opportunity to explore Jamaa El Fna Square.
