OCTOBER 2018 : ITALY : VIA DI FRANCESCO : DAY 13 : Gubbio - Agriturismo Valdichiascio - 11.4 kms - 3 hours

For the next few days we are having shorter walks to three Agriturismos (farmstays) before we reach Assisi on Friday. Today’s walk was 11.2km and was to Agriturismo Valdichiascio (on the map)

It was market day in Gubbio. Lots of activity in the lower square.

Some negotiations

It was only a short walk out of the historical centre on to the route outside the walls. The Danish contingent were on the move early

And were gone.. they have a 23km day today

Helena had spent the night in the San Francesco Monastery and was very impressed with the hospitality.

In a small square nearby is the statue of St Francis and the wolf. This is the place St Francis tamed the wolf, legend has it, so there is a statue and small chapel to mark the event.

Another artistic depiction in the little park adjoining the chapel

A flat walk until Ponte d’Assi

Some interested onlookers

Artwork along the way

Refreshments and lunch supply stop at Ponte d’Assi

What was to come..

Winding path for the next hour or so

Past farms and gardens

A few testing ascents

Rest stops

Views across valleys...most fields have been harvested and prepared for next year

Striking views back to Gubbio where you can recognise the Church of St Urbano on the peak and some of the large buildings below.

Our accommodation for the night.

Old farmhouse- our window in view

Our host - Maria-Teresa

Very comfortable room with interesting artwork Dinner, bed and breakfast + drinks €95 for a couple.

Grand ensuite

Some attractive nooks around the house

Lots of places to relax in the garden.

Three German couples (from Stuttgart and Munich) with us tonight. We have seen them all at various albergos and B&Bs since Badia Prataglia. We sat with a Dutch couple for dinner, Janet and Sebastian, who started today and will just walk four days until Spello as part of a larger 3 week Italian trip.
