OCTOBER 2018 : ITALY : VIA DI FRANCESCO : DAY 19 : Trevi - Spoleto - 20 kms - 5 hours

Another fine day - 25o - perfect for walking.
Our guidebook disregarded all the Via di San Francesco waymarks today and sent us on a path on minor roads and bike tracks.
For walkers who want a little more challenging and remote paths higher in the mountains other guidebooks offer suggestions.

Leaving our accommodation in Trevi.

Breakfast in the main piazza at a busy local cafe - the last cafe we saw until we reached Fonti del Clitunno

Apple tarts today

We enjoyed walking down from the top of Trevi

Enjoying views across the valley

We then moved on to a gravel path

Stunning views back to Trevi

We walked through 3 communities all proud of their olive production

A pleasant walk

After 7 kms we arrived in Fonti del Clitunno. Always happy to have a rest and a coffee.
We met up with Bob, Robbie and Kyle - all from Washington State - we have stayed in several of the same places with them.
They began in Gubbio and finish in Spoleto today.
They did not pre-book their accommodation and have stayed at monasteries and hermitages where they could. Mixed result.

The attractive Fonti del Clitunno

Then our bubble burst after such a lovely morning.
We spent the next 12 kms on a long flat exposed bike path.
In hindsight we would have caught the bus from the cafe.

Some views to the hills around us

Some market gardens

We walked into Spoleto down the main road with views of the World Heritage city ahead of us. It has a history dating back to 241BC.

We are looking forward to exploring Spoleto - we have another day here

The size of the historic site is impressive

We had quite a walk to our hotel

The Athena Hotel (€55) is on the edge of the city wall with easy access to all it promises.

One of the ancient gates is across from our hotel.

We walked up the alleyways

Until we reached the main commercial street, Corso Giuseppe Mazzini

We had dinner in a little Ristorante on Piazza Della Liberta

Looking forward to lots of exploring tomorrow.
