A beautiful day. Clear and 25o.
The guidebook offered us two choices today.
1. A mountainous route - 19 kms (HARD)
2. A lower flat path - 13kms (EASY)
Even the GPS recognised the two paths. We took the easy, orange path.
Leaving Assisi by three arches
Market day with colourful porcelain products
Sandwich and fruit stop
Off on to a minor road in minutes
Views back to Assisi
Olives, olives, olives today
A view and rest stop
First view of Spello - another hilltop town
We entered through the arch at the top
But our GPS brought us down a service road to our hotel - 3 star and clean - €50 a double room.
Views out to the old town
Only metres from the town walls
A fortress town with many churches and winding streets
Roman ruins
Arches
We found an Umbrian specialty wine bar for lunch
Then we made our way up the winding lanes to the top
The main piazza
Specialty shops
Restaurants with views over the valley
Lots of activity in the cafes and restaurants
Artwork
Lots of tourists
We met Janet and Sebastian as they entered the town - now off the Perugia to continue their Italian holiday
A lookout at the top of the town with views to Assisi
The evening crowd flocking into the town
Boutiques
Our choice for dinner at the town gates.
Lots of lovely restaurants
Local kids celebrating at a party
Walking around on this balmy evening we found a preserved frescoes in a glassed in room, which was originally the Capella d’San Anna.
A great day’s walk for us today on flat, quiet country roads with views of vineyards and olive groves in clear sunshine.
A historic town with a lot of charm to explore this afternoon.
