OCTOBER 2018 : ITALY : VIA DI FRANCESCO : DAY 28 : Montelibretti - Monterotondo - 17 kms - 5 hours

17 kms today on mainly flat farmland tracks and minor roads until we neared Monterotondo where the traffic became more intense.
Again, nothing of real interest along the way. It is still a  rural landscape with vineyards, fruit orchards and olive groves.
Having said that we enjoyed the peace, pace and the cool, sunny weather.
Today we walked the second half of this map below from Montelibretti in the middle of the page.

Dawn outside our window

Claudia prepared a lovely breakfast - fresh fruit salad, yogurt, boiled eggs, fresh bread, croissants, juice and coffee.

In the stairway outside the apartment

Up close and personal with all the houses and small gardens as we edged our way along the main road.

It wasn’t long and we were back on farmland tracks

All the crops in neat rows as far as the eye could see

Beautiful morning

Every house and farm had at least two dogs who delighted in barking themselves hoarse as we passed by

A rest stop

Torre della Fiora, which was a watch tower dating back to the 13th century.
In the foreground a sculpture. Walkers just like us.

Joggers and locals walking in this part of the forest today

An attractive farming precinct. Ricotta manufacture.

Fruit trees, after harvest, with autumn colours

The route took us along the highway for a section, which was a bit hectic. Then we were taken down a grotty path, which was safer but a little unsavoury.

Arrival in lower Monterotondo. Now much closer to Rome.

We walked south along a bike path and then walked up into the old town of Monterotondo.
Its history dates back to the 11th century.

Monterotondo is renown for its passeggiata, when families come out for an evening stroll.

The school is in the main thoroughfare and their playground the piazza amongst all the lunch time diners

We walked further into historical centre

And found our hotel in Piazza dei Leoni
Albergo dei Leoni - €58 with breakfast

About 5.30 we stepped out to enjoy Monterotondo’s‘passeggiata’.
The whole town from babies to the elderly were out mixing with friends.

We had a drink at a bar called Elevation in a piazza across from our hotel

Dinner at the hotel restaurant - excellente!

Wonderful end to a stress-free day!
