OCTOBER 2018 : ITALY : VIA DI FRANCESCO : DAY 29 : Monterotondo - outskirts of Rome - 20 kms - 6 hours

Another enjoyable day’s walk. 21o and most of the morning through farmland and the Marcigliana nature reserve.
The last 6 kms was our entry into the outskirts of Rome, plenty of places for coffee and lunch...and to catch a bus or taxi if you prefer.
We walked the whole plan today as we had accommodation booked on the route.

We left Monterotondo following the school children as they were going to school.

We left off the south of the town through suburban streets

Around a corner and we were in the countryside and some immaculate farms.

Vallericca

Suddenly there was a flurry and noise, which we assumed was a black dog, but oh no, a wild pig scurried across the road and into the brambles.

Views west

A few hills to get our heart pumping

A dovecote

Old farm buildings

A skink..they have been our constant companions along the route

We walked for 6 km on the Riserva Naturale delle Marcigliana

A rest under some gum trees!

Then we reached a crossroads and we were in the outskirts of Rome.
One of the first bars was the Australia Bar in Cinquina, where we had lunch.

Named because all the streets around it were Australian place names.

We’d never seen so many buses and taxis..lots of creative alternatives for the tired traveller

Our original booking was in Via di S.Constanza but we learnt that this apartment has not been open for a few months, despite our booking.

With our mobiles  at the ready we found a much grander alternative at the end of the street, Hotel Santa Constanza (€110 B&B)
Deal of the day!

Rome skyline through our skylight

Hotel staff recommended Momart down the road

Hugely popular buffet menu with local students

We had the a la carte to celebrate our arrival in Rome

Exceptional!

Tomorrow we walk into the Vatican.
