SEPTEMBER 2018 : ITALY : Rome to Florence

Breakfast at a very modern cafe on the corner near our guesthouse - the displays were colourful and stylish

Leaving New Moon Guesthouse

Having left all our excess luggage we set off with our packs to Termini railway station to travel to Florence to begin a pilgrim walk, Via di Francesco, The Way of St Francis. 550kms in 30 days with public transport to support us if need be. All our accommodation is booked - many and various types.
First off Florence to organise our credential for stamping along the route. Destination St Peter’s Cathedral on 26th October.

Termini

We could only book a 11.45 train so we investigated the food hall at the station

Busy transit centre - state of the art shopping and restaurants to distract while you wait for your train

Express train. €38 each with 40% off for seniors over 65!

An hour and a half to Florence

We decided to walk to our accommodation on the outskirts of Florence - method in our madness as this marks the beginning of the pilgrim route we will start on Thursday, so we will have a head start. We enjoyed distractions along the way.

Down main streets, suburban lanes and underground walkways

We stopped for lunch at another traditional trattoria. Very friendly and delicious.

Mark had ‘Drunken spaghetti’ served in a half beer bottle.

At about 4 we found the entry to our accommodation

It’s a youth hostel

With a difference - an old residence

With a surprisingly large and ornate entrance and reception area

Frescoes on the ceiling

We have an ensuite room. €15 per head per night...with breakfast!

I have checked with my travelling companions in 1978 and we're sure we stayed in the same youth hostel. Amazing it's still in use as a hostel 40 years later.....JulieJ
