SEPTEMBER 2018 : ITALY : A day in Florence

A day in Florence before we head off on our journey to Rome.

A surprise at breakfast to find Tilde Barrie also staying at this hostel. I had only messaged Ele, her mum, this morning about her whereabouts.

We left the hostel about 8.30 and caught the no. 11 bus into the centre of Florence. €1.50.

Mark directed us with his Maps.me app

The Duomo in the distance

Incidental art along the way

Attractive piazzas

Modern technology

Part of our walk coincided with the initial stage of the Via di Francesco, which cuts off about 4kms of tomorrow’s walk.

Santa Croce the largest Franciscan church in the world - the starting point for the Via di Francesco.

An excellent icon of St Francis and description of the main events of his life from the Florentine school of painting

Some restoration work in the church

Our first stamp on our credenziale.

One of the Franciscan brother’s residence? Apartment attached to Santa Croce.

We then walked to the Ponte Vecchio

Then across the bridge towards the markets and the Duomo

Lunch nearby

A bus home. Then Mark discovered his wallet was missing from his pants’ pocket, probably stolen at the busy bus station. Some cash gone but we were able to cancel our credit cards within the hour. Our first bad experience in 8 years.

A happy meal tonight with Tilde and Sarah. Canberra friends. We walked to the bottom of the long driveway to a bustling pizza/pasta restaurant.
