Day 5 and a visit to some of the attractions just outside of the city centre.
Drumming and chanting..we expected another festival but no, a protest outside the hospital.
On the bus we passed through a section with large stately villas, unlike the rest of the city.
Our first stop was the Lookout at Monte San Pedro. Wonderful views across A Coruña.
There was an exhibition about the lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules. This stone was embedded in the base of the original structure, with authority from Augustus Caesar for its construction.
The development of the lighthouse over the centuries.
View over a maze and the beautifully maintained park with the lighthouse in the distance.
We were able to take the Panoramic Lift down to coast level.
Pleasant walk along the foreshore back into town.
The beaches were popular today.
Lunch overlooking the beach.
One of the artefacts in the Maria Pita house museum.
An excellent exhibition (free as all the other museums have been) with lots of historical detail
The Spanish Armada had been a dismal failure in attacking Britain in 1588 so the British vowed to attack all Spanish ports beginning with A Coruña under the direction of Sir Francis Drake. There was such strong resistance from the local population, led by Maria Pita, despite a huge invading force (17,000 men), that the city remained in Spanish hands. She has become a local hero.
Back to Maria Pita Plaza.
Families enjoying the pleasant evening. Lots of games underway.
Another free concert for us.
Tonight the youth orchestra playing Mahler's 1st Symphony. Exquisite.
Enthusiastic performers.
So professional.
Full moon tonight...over our marshy part of the river.
