AUGUST 2016 : SPAIN : CAMINO PRIMITIVO : DAY 8 : A Fontsagrada - Cadavo Baleira - 29 kms - 7 hours

Distance walked : 156.1 kms

If your knees and feet had not been ruined in the last two days then today was designed to ensure you were tested to the full. A glorious day with spectacular views and hills and slopes to challenge the most daring!

A misty farewell. Mark is feeling stronger and more stable...instead of a 25 euro taxi it was a 4 euro bus ride.

         The tiny hamlet of Padron.

         Road walking... Local cemetery.

Even in the haze lovely views of the surrounding hills....or mountains, as I was yet to discover.

Then up a forestry road into a pine forest.

           Climbing...

            Higher..

             Pastoral scene..

            Polish couple enjoying the view.

At the top the Hospital de Montouto, a former pilgrim hospital, founded in 1390 by Pedro 1, the Cruel.

    Views of small communities.

            Steep descent..

          Friendly cafe at Paradavella.

Another surprisingly steep ascent to A Lastra.

A Lastra, a town formerly owned by the Knights of St John.

Brightly coloured beetle caught my eye.

           Attractive town of Fountaniera.

Last stretch on hot, dusty road.

First sight of Cadavo Balieira. The area has been excavated as it was a medieval Moorish stronghold - armour, swords and tombs found.

Our Pension Eligio. 35 euros for a double room. Excellent restaurant and bar. There has been a shortage of accommodation, particularly in the albergues, with large groups travelling together, which has meant a bunfight at the end of the day. We have opted to book double rooms ahead. Many couples of our age are doing the same.

Friendly staff and great fresh menu.

            Mark opted for rabbit stew.

Coincidence! John and I had roast wild rabbit for dinner this evening! I remember Montoutu? For us a wild wet misty day on the hills last year. Really enjoying your blog. Maugie
