AUGUST 2016 : SPAIN : CAMINO INGLÉS : DAY 4 : Miño - Betanzos : 10 kms - 4 hours

Distance walked so far : 51 kms

We set off at about 8 this morning, finding a cafe for breakfast and with Mark keen to complete another section. Today was our last day on the coast and for the next three days we head inland.

Our destination today was Betanzos.

Easy pathway out of Miño.

Lots of small vegetable gardens with some impressive pumpkins and squash - never on the menu.

Crossing the River Lambre.

Obviously someone has taken the saying, ' a man's home is his castle' literally.

Our sole contact with wildlife today

Priests preparing for mass in the Church of San Pantaleón Das Viñas. I noticed on a nearby poster that there will be a  music concert in this little church square tomorrow, featuring the 'Bombers' and other bands...that should rock the foundations of this otherwise peaceful building.

                                                  Potato harvest

               Loving the multicoloured hydrangeas.

Walking company today - a couple from Fremantle

Humid but fresh conditions and lush countryside

A rest before descending into Betanzos. A taxi in the background - but Mark wasn't even tempted.

Crossing the Mandeo River on the Ponte Vella. A very picturesque entry to the Betanzos.

We entered through the Arco de Ponte Vella, originally part of the medieval wall.

We climbed the steep path and were welcomed with an amazing site of the bustling Hermanos Garcia  Naveira Square to the left of us.

The Hermanos Garcia Naveira Square houses the old pilgrim hospital built in the seventeenth century.

To the right of us was Praza de Constitución with the church of Santiago and the Town Hall.

Too early to get into the albergue we had a refreshing snack in Praza Constitución.

Just down another narrow street is the modern municipal albergue. 6 euros.
Mark thinks that they could do well to employ a town planner to flatten out these plazas.

Beautifully clean albergue with kitchen, fully furnished laundry area, excellent bathrooms. Good bunch of people staying tonight. Many more English speakers. The hospitelero's wife was born in Sydney, which was a nice connection.

The church of San Francisco. It has an outstanding collection of tombs of nobles, including Pérez de Andrade of Pontedeume fame.

Lovely cafes. We found the Cafe Versalle in the colonnades with wifi to spend a relaxing time.

Fernando, our hospitalelo, keen to share an O'Hara black beer with Mark. He gave us a great suggestion for our evening meal, Mesón A Tixola.

This is a really attractive town with lots of life and personality. Every day is a surprise!

Mark was pleased with today's effort. His knee is not swollen and he feels positive that he could be on the mend.
