AUGUST 2016 : SPAIN : CAMINO PRIMITIVO : DAY 11 : Melide - Santiago - 51 kms - 1 1/4 hours on bus

Distance walked so far : 204.6 kms

Today, as we have walked the next section three times before so we caught the bus from Melide to Santiago. Amazing seeing the hundreds of people walking towards Santiago in the heat today (from our air- conditioned wifi-ed bus - 4.65 euros)

The busy bar at the Xaneiro Hotel. It was full - could have been a private albergue.

A lost pilgrim - could have been me this week.

The wonderful Maria - excellent English and the quintessential host - calm and helpful at all times.

Walking into Santiago near the cathedral at the time of midday mass.

Statues of St James (Santiago) on many faces of the building.

Pilgrims flooding into the main square.

Delighted to arrive and to have the satisfaction of experiencing another Camino route.

Lots of theatre and music around the city for the summer festival.

           More music.

Lots of Galician and Camino artefacts.

          Ceramic churches of the Caminos.

One of the cathedral squares. People lining up to fulfil the ritual of rubbing a gold statue of St James in the crypt where his bones are said to be buried.

Just a street away from all the commercial chaos is a little quiet traditional bar we like.

Fresh tasty food. Sardines today with cheese, green peppers and salad.

                                            Pepe and his crew.

Despite limited accommodation we were able to rebook at Pension Santa Cristina - 30 euros for a double room, right in the centre of the old town.

                                             Simple, light airy rooms.

           A sunny courtyard.

Just off one of the main squares.

At every turn there is something to delight.

                                             Ancient Colonades.

Lush gardens surrounding beautiful old villas.

         Santiago tart - almond tart.

Drinks with Ida, who also arrived today. She had the pleasure of a full mass with incense at midday.

A flurry of colour as a musician dressed in traditional costume flies past.

Greek music from this unusual instrument.

    Sunset at 10pm.

Such a wonderful city. It never disappoints.

Well done! Santiago looks festive and wonderful as ever. More food and wine to celebrate is just the thing to do. N&W
