AUGUST 2016 : SPAIN : CAMINO PRIMITIVO : DAY 9 : Cádavo Baleira - Lugo - 30 kms

After a few torrid days and reflecting that Mark has spent the past 8 days on his own, I decided to rest my weary legs and travel with him on the bus to Lugo, a major town of Galicia. We will spend 2 days sightseeing as recommended by guidebooks and other travellers.

So the yellow arrows led us to the bus stop.

45 minute bus trip for 2 euros 20 cents each.  Another town spread along a ridge and because of its location it has been an important site from Roman times. 100,000 population. Now a centre for the services sector - commercial, government administration and health.

There is a considerable old town within thick city walls. Originally Roman but reinforced in the 18th century.

We took a 2 km walk around the walls.

They weave in and out of the city centre.

Many artefacts relating to the Roman era.

Lugo or Lugo Augusti was founded in 14 B.C. under the rule of Emperor Augustus.
In 2002 it was made a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Beautifully preserved mosaics in Roman public baths in the Plaza Mayor.

Cathedral of Santa Maria. Begun in 1129.

The main altar with stunning painted rotunda

A decorated float used for special religious occasions.

Colonades, reminiscent of Santiago,in the busy restaurant and bar area.

Popular bars with fabulous seafood, including whole squid and tempura octopus.

              Delicious tapas offered with drinks.

Back to our hotel up Rua A Coruña for 65 cents by bus. 31 degrees today.

Our budget pension (35 euro a double room) is connected to this stylish bar.

Octopus, prawns and salad for dinner.

Very relaxing and interesting day. We look forward to more delights tomorrow.
