AUGUST 2015 : EASTERN EUROPE : European Peace Walk : Day 6 : Nyargliet, Hungary - Sopronkovesd, Hungary (22 kms - 6 hours)

Distance travelled so far : 111 kms

Today was a really good day's walk. Excellent waymarking, opportunities for stops and variety of scenery. Still as hot as it has been, 38 degrees.

Lizzie's mum was up at 5am to provide an early breakfast so we could all set off in the cool of the day.

We set off at 6am. Grateful for a wonderfully warm and generous stay.

We set off at 6 am, confident of our path with consistent waymarking.

              Fabulous sunrise.

A solitary sunflower greets the day.

A shrine, with beautiful icon, to St Francis of Assisi.

                                             Religious shrines at every turn.

Local artist's work spread throughout the village.

Our first stop at a Co Op supermarket.

Walking at a good speed on soft paths.

First view of any town is the church spire.

                                        Hay piled high by farmhouse.

Walking through villages in the quiet of the morning.

Some road walking, carefully on the left side, facing the traffic.

                                    Interesting fungi.

A cool shaded path for several kilometres.

Fallow fields with views towards wind turbines on the Austrian border.

Unusual fruit, inedible, and apparently rancid when ripe and rotting.

A welcome sign into a village.

A refreshing drink in a rather seedy bar. Our only choice of venue in this village.

Mark feeling at home with the locals.

This lady drove by us a few times on the road, waving. We saw her in the village and said hello. She called for her daughter, who is an English teacher, and she translated that her mother wanted to
ask if we needed help but didn't have the English to express it. Just a lovely encounter.

A stork's nest perched high on telephone wire. No sign of storks.

Acres of sunflowers and huge specimens in these fields.

The friendly town of Sopron, which has embraced the European Peace Walk,

Local high school students welcome us. We are staying in the school gym.

In the school courtyard we see our first stork.

At 5 pm Zoltan, the town's mayor, arrived to greet us.

Really interesting information session about Hungarian history and Sopronkovesd.

Zoltan and his interpreter, Petra, telling the folklore of the establishment of Hungary.

Main industries are a seat belt factory and propeller manufacturing.

              Dinner together with the mayor.

             Mark had delicious deer cutlets.

Good food and lots of interesting conversation.

Walk back to our gym accommodation. Another hot night, preparing for another early start.
  Fascinating day.
