JULY 2008 : ITALY : Memories of the Via Francigena : San Minialto - Gambassi Terme - 24 kms

Memories of the Via Francigena July 2008
San Minialto - Gambassi Terme - 24kms

“We enjoyed our night in the chapel hospital in San Miniato Basso, which was donation only. What we did not realise when we walked up the hill this morning very early that San Miniato proper is a magnificent hill town in classic style with co-joined buildings around a magnificent piazza and along a ridge. We had our morning capuccino and pastry there and bought delicious proscuitto, cheese, bread, tomatoes etc for our lunch. We were very lucky that we did as today was quite a long walk about 24 kms with no other villages on the route. But what a route!

Leaving San Minialto

It was typically Tuscan with beautiful homes set amongst wheat, olive and wine groves. Every direction was like a postcard so we took so many photos, despite the area being hot and dry.

Tonight we are staying in Gambassi Terme — another hill top town. Tonight we are in a little hotel above a trattoria. We read on a public sign that the Via Francigena has been attributed the reason for so much knowledge and new ideas spreading through Tuscany and along its route from Canterbury to Rome through the ages with the thousands of pilgrims who have travelled its path since Sigaric’s journey in 990.

It is becoming very warm for walking but we are very proud that we managed today and tomorrow we have a lovely day planned. A short walk (l6kms) to San Giminigniano and then we are staying at a special Agriturismo (with pool!) and fabulous restaurant. That will make up for the blisters! “
