Memories of the Via Francigena July/August 2008 : Cassio - Pontremoli
“We left Cassio on another fine morning.
The local grocery van for outlying villages
Our first stop was in Berceto. This is another exquisite market towns with shady piazzas and just off the tourist route. While having coffee, and finding the town internet, Julie was chatting to local lady who recommended a restaurant for lunch.
Ristorante Da Rino
Tortellini with fungi one of their specialities
We walked another two hours to a hilltop hostel on the main road, called Della Cisa, associated with the Via Francigena.
We clocked up another 19 kms today.
The next day we decided to take the highway rather than the tracks, which were rather convoluted and not well signposted. We left the hills and descended about 700m.
We found a few villages where we would love to return
Montelungo
At about 11am we arrived in Pontremoli, another large town. We were mesmerised by the architecture, courtyards and the trattorias.
Then through an archway we discovered a trattoria, perfect for lunch
A special lunch menu served by a professional, who was not amused when we could not manage more than one course of the set menu.
Then we walked off to find the train station for a few days’detour”
