JULY 2008 : ITALY : Memories of the Cinque Terra

Memories of the Cinque Terre - July 2008

“We caught a train from Pontremoli to La Spezia and from there a train on a minor line to Monterosso, the most northern town in the Cinque Terre. Julie and Mark found us two rooms at a small hotel on the waterfront. We had a swim in the free part of the rocky beach. The water was divine.

Another email from sunny Italy. We have had the happiest day today saturated in a European summer day in a big tourist area, the Cinque Terre. The weather has been perfect and walking the 5 towns by a turquoise ocean, investigating each alley—wayed town and swimming whenever we could, mainly off rocky swimming areas. The route is about l6kms and quite steep in parts. There are lots of steps so we appreciated our boots and walking sticks.

I suggested yesterday that we stay another night in Monterosso and leave our packs in our rooms for the day. It was a good decision as they would have been very cumbersome and awkward as the path in some spots is quite narrow. I fear for the larger traveller at these places. The water was about 24oC by Bob's watch. It was just divine and beneficial for restoring foot and general well—being.

Tonight we are having dinner at a seafood restaurant nearby..seafood stew is the specialty. We saw them preparing it last night..spectacular. Last night it was quite warm and the place was abuzz - softly lit trattorias, and lots of people out. There was even a traditional Italian band playing in a small amphitheatre with people waltzing.

Tomorrow we are catching a train to Lucca at 8.30 and will begin walking again in earnest on Sunday. Tuscany here we come.”
