DECEMBER 2018 : CHRISTMAS EVE : NATIONAL GALLERY


A morning at the NGA to see the latest pre- Raphaelite exhibition.
Paintings and design from the breakaway English art movement of the late 19th century.

The star attraction Waterhouse’s Lady of Shallot. We loved the detail, especially in the quilt.


Elizabeth Siddal, Rossetti’s muse, was a painter in her own right.
This is her Knight and Lady Love.


Elizabeth Siddal was the model for John Everett Millais’ Ophelia.


The Shadow of Death by Henry Holman Hunt.
This painting is full of symbolism but I really liked the section with Mary in her blue cotton dress, barefooted in the carpenter’s workshop, opening the chest with the gifts of the Wise men, 30 years before presented to their family in the Bethlehem stable. Now she sees in the shadow the future for her son.


The medieval writer, Chaucer, is considered the father of English literature. There was a revival of his work in the 19th century in exquisitely patterned volumes.


On a lighter note, we also experienced The Spirits of the Pumpkins Descended into the Heavens by Yayoi Kusama. An installation within a yellow-spotted room.


Peeking through the tiny window all was revealed.
