SPAIN : SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA : DAY 2

Weather : clear, sunny : 18o

We had been warned today was the date for a general
strike in Spain. As we walked out of our hotel we saw
the first evidence of it with graffiti plastered on nearby
buildings.

Shops and businesses were all
closed and posters everywhere.

We decided to take a walk in the sunshine,
through the cathedral precinct.

This is EEA after his make-over at the
barbers yesterday. He's gone from his
traditional pilgrim image to Sean
Connery.

Beautiful gardens with views of
the old town.

Then we heard and saw protestors gathering
at a nearby plaza.

We followed the crowds as they moved down
the streets

The protestors then amalgamated as a huge
movement back up the main thoroughfares to
one of the cathedral plazas.

Chanting groups, loud explosions and
passionate speeches.

Next to the hotel is the
17th century Benedictine monastery
of St Martin- now a museum.
A fascinating display of stamps
created by the monks from early
19th century.

Hundreds of examples of beautifully crafted
stamps in St Martin's museum.

A classic model of the
compassionate St James
 killing Moors.

Despite the fact that most restaurants were
closed because of the national strike we
found one open and enjoyed a seafood meal.

The protest are making the news here in Australia. At least you have done your bit to avert even more financial crisis in Europe by spending some money there!
