Rest and acclimatisation day in Samdo in preparation for crossing Larkya La Pass in 2 days' time.
We woke
up to the sounds of local farmers taking their yaks out to graze for the day.
Breakfast
in a stunning setting on a crisp, clear morning.
Despite
being a rest day, Satish and Tunka walked us up a steep hill (Mark called it a
mountain) overlooking the town - here is the view our campsite as we began our
climb.
Grateful
to have reached our destination.
The view
of the town as we descended.
We were
surprised to see some Blue Sheep. They are shy, native animals and not often
spied in the wild.
Mark was
fascinated to see this new-born yak amongst the animals grazing.
The
local Buddhist monastery hidden amongst the houses.
A woman
weaving on the verandah in her home. Each dwelling was 2 storied and had a connecting courtyard.
Washing
at the local tap - without mules.
Great
excitement when a helicopter arrived. Apparently 2 Japanese trekkers did not
fully acclimatise and had some problems with altitude sickness so their guide
had to walk from Dharmashala (3 hours away) to telephone for help in Samdo. He
then accompanied the pilot to fetch the ailing walkers. I hope we have better luck tomorrow - feeling a little anxious.
Families
flocked to enjoy the spectacle of the helicopter.
