JUNE 2023 : DAY 5 : MENORCA : Cala Pilar - Cala Morell : 14.3 kns

Cala Pilar - Cala Morell : 14 kms
Stages 7 and 8

James, our very congenial driver collected us at 8am, dropping me at my starting point and Mark to Ciutadella to our next hotel.
James is a fount of information. He is born and bred in Menorca but as his mother was from Cambridgeshire, he speaks English in a Cockney accent.

I set off solo feeling very confident because of the excellent waymarking and my GPS support.

I was delighted that the first 8 kms was relatively flat and often in shade of pine trees lining the path. So I completed that section in two hours.

The second half of the walk was on rocky cliffs. Some lovely coves where hoardes of families spent the day, again after they had to walk for half an hour to get to these remote beaches.
At about 1pm I arrived at Cala Morell, the first white houses appearing like a mirage.

Cala Morell. Affluent area. Large white villas. Obviously a very popular ex-pat enclave.

I was able to contact the transport company to collect me a few hours earlier than planned.

Hotel Patricia in Ciutadella. The best feature is the fabulous pool, where we spent part of the afternoon.

Ciutadella was the previous provincial capital.
Definitely not as impressive as Mahon as it is flat with wider streets like boulevards. Interesting old town though, where the cathedral and government buildings are situated. Colonnades with specialty shops, cafes and a plethora of ice cream and gelateria. There is also a large port.
We are here for 4 nights so I’m sure we will discover it’s delights by the end of the week.

So much life around the port tonight. Wonderful craft market stalls as we wandered down to the port minutes from our hotel.  Dinner in a traditional restaurant- both really happy with our choices - roast suckling pork and mine was an Emperor seafood casserole.
Definitely returning to another place by the water tomorrow night.
