JUNE 2023 : DAY 3 : MENORCA : Cami de Cavalls : Es Grau - Port d’Addaia : 19 kms

Breakfast - lots of local produce, including the ‘cake’ of butter, preserved quince, sour cherry jam, cheeses ..

At breakfast we met another Australian couple who have just completed the highlights of the Cami de Cavalls as we plan to do.
They had some good advice and confirmed it was a hot and rocky track. They said that one of the unfortunate aspects was that the local company which transports you to the starting points prefers a late start, which means you walk in the heat of the day. We will see what we can arrange..

Referring to the green map above. Today we walked sections 1-3.
Es Grau - Port d’Addaia.19 kms

Day 1
We were collected just after 9 and delivered to our first drop off point at Es Grau. ( From the start it was obvious this transport company, Nuratravel, was efficient and helpful unlike the other Australian couple’s experience)

From the beginning of the walk - warm conditions, gravel paths, some awkward descents, we knew this could be a challenging day for Mark’s knees and heat intolerance.

Some quaint buildings along the coast

Some excellent swimming areas but as we were travelling slower than expected there was no time to stop.

The waymarking was excellent and the coastal views were stunning. Lots of different groups enjoying a Sunday outing. Iconic wooden gates and fencing.

Dune flora

At about the 10km mark we headed inland for a long hot dry section which proved very uncomfortable for Mark. Funnily enough, the long range forecast was for rain and indeed, rumbling thunder and dark clouds were in the distance but passed by without affecting us.
After a few rests and hydration, the path led us back to the coast and the Addaia Salt Pans, where there were several flamingoes.

After a few hours without shade and nearly at our destination, the path dealt us a rather bizarre ending. A steep ascent with cut wooden steps.

By this stage Mark was exhausted but I persuaded him to persevere for the next half hour where we met our transport representative, James, who has suggested some modified options for the next few days.

Our accommodation for the next two nights is Hostal Palma in the fishing village of Fornells.
Celebrating with a local gin made here since the 1770s.

Delicious paella for dinner tonight at El Pecador.
We have been delighted with the choice of accommodation Mac Adventures has chosen for us. Such fascinating locations!
