JULY 2016 : SPAIN : CAMINO PRIMITIVO : DAY 3 : Salas - Tineo - 18.4 kms - 6 hours

Distance walked : 60.4 kms

Misty rain this morning only 18o and pleasant walking. Sunny this afternoon.

Mark was still feeling tentative this morning so we found a local bar for breakfast. They were happy to organise a taxi for later in the morning. The proprietor gave us a complimentary bocadillo and banana to have for our lunch. I felt happy that Mark had all his music on the iPod, books to read on the iPad, the ABC Radio National app, emails and access to FaceTime, if you want to talk to him.

I set off up through the town, where the route was well sign-posted.

Travelling solo.

Misty rain. One section was on the highway which was quite dangerous.

Most of the day was on minor roads and paths, with some quite steep sections. We passed this popular albergue on the way - too far for us to get to yesterday. Apparently the hospiteleros here ensure you have a memorable stay.

I ran into Heather, an Australian and Ida, a Dutch women, who have both walked in France and along the coast. This was a rest stop with WC and vending machines...but no coffee. We found some further along the road in Espina.

A fellow traveller enjoying the rain.

A small church in a hamlet outside Espina, where the route took a turn upwards into the hills.

Another albergue and bar in the hills appeared through the mist.

The mobile supermarket visiting small communities.

             Views of fertile farmland.

A herd of cows enjoying the mud...as I did along the path..

A rather enthusiastic St James (Santiago) greeted me as I entered Tineo.

The path entered high above the town. I was dreading a steep stairway..or road...

The path led me down gradually to the main square and to Mark and to our exquisite accommodation.
The new albergue is the lower floor (10 euros each) is of a 5 star hotel. It even boasts a sauna!

The main square of Tineo. This was a city founded by Rome but unfortunately none of the early medieval buildings have survived. Our hotel is a renovated 16th century building, which is an excellent example of Asturian Renaissance architecture.

Pintxos for lunch.

The town hall towering over the main square

Views over the valley from the main plaza

A Catalan family we have shared the path with for the last few days

Sarah and her mum, Siobhan, from Belfast, Claire from Yorkshire, Heather from Brisbane - organising the next few days' accommodation. Enjoying the afternoon's sunshine.
