JULY 2014 : IRELAND : Killybegs to Cleggan, Connemara National Park

Today we left Killybegs in County Donegal and drove through County Sligo, County Mayo to County Galway. The scenery has to be seen to be believed. Absolutely spectacular - from the rugged coast, to the massive mountains and the pristine villages in between.

Today there was a toy collection along the main highway for hospital child patients. Always excitement about Donegal's next hurling match.

Donegal - an attractive city centre with a castle to boot.

Benbulben - a massive landmark in County Sligo.

Strandhill, a popular surfing beach west of Sligo.

Downpatrick Head on County Mayo's northern coast.

Carrowmore Lake in County Mayo near Bangor.

           Newport in County Mayo.

The gorgeous town of Westport in County Mayo. Thriving town with wonderful atmosphere.

The river and decorated bridges in Westport.

The Partry Mountains in County Galway.

We are staying with our friends for two nights in a holiday cottage in the village of Cleggan near the Connemarra National Park.

For 14 years Maugie's extended family have stayed in this cottage by the beach with the
national park to explore.

We had no idea that we would experience such spectacular scenery today. In the main it was sparsely populated country with sheep, cattle and peat excavation in evidence. There are no forests - bar some planted pine in small plots - and the country is flat with large grass-covered mountains monopolising the landscape.

Wonderful classic Irish coast and countryside! The teddies attached to the fence a small reminder of the tree teddies on the road to Bungendore perhaps?
