JUNE 2023 : DAY 14 : SARDINIA : Olbia

Our destination was Olbia

The spinach quiche was the standout at breakfast this morning.

Waiting for Paola we considered hijacking this Ape. They are so tiny.

 On the Golgo Plateau a Neolithic pool.

Lots of free-range farm animals in and around the route today. Many wandering along the road.

On the Golgo plateau the remote church of St Paul built in the 16th century. Still a pilgrim destination on the feast day in July when pilgrims still come and stay in the stone outbuildings or camp and rest under the large white olive tree, specifically planted for pilgrims’ comfort centuries ago.

We continued on the mountain road, Route 125.

At the top, 1,000 metres, we stopped with the hordes of bikers at a cafe dedicated to them.

The Gorropu Gorge is a 500m walk from the summit.



We didn’t walk the gorge but there are spectacular photos on the internet, like this one.

Lunch at a peaceful reserve of Sorgenti de su Gologne - a spring and extensive cave system, with the obligatory chapel.

Passing through the attractive town of Dorgali - where the women are considered the most beautiful in all Italy.

At 3pm we arrive in the large modern town of Nuoro where we’d asked to visit the extensive costume museum, recommended by friends as a ‘must see’.

A beautifully curated exhibition and with Paola’s commentary it was most interesting.

In the courtyard at the rear of the museum there is a reproduction of a traditional patio.

We are in Olbia at Hotel Cavour tonight on the north-east coast. It is a large port with modern hotels, cafes and attractive plazas.
