Lots of cake on show for breakfast, prepared by the hostess. A little too early in the day for me.
Today was a long day in the car visiting towns up the Smerelda Costa. A perfect day to see it in all it’s glory - 33o, blue skies and ‘emerald’ waters.
We set off at 9am from Olbia.
Our first stop was Porto Cervo, playground of the rich and famous. Super yachts, high end brands, impressive villas.
We continued up the highway to Palau and from here we could see all the northern islands, including the popular island of La Maddalena, and the southern coast of Corsica.
Lunch was at the friendly town of St Teresa Gallura. A watchtower, attractive beach and town nearby. Mark had a serving of donkey.
A quirk of nature - an elephant shaped rock along the highway.
A surprise as we headed over the north coast the hilltop town of Castelsardo, built on the rocky outcrop by the Genoese in the 12th century.
Woven palm products are a specialty in this area.
This fresco was in the medieval church. It tells the story of three martyrs killed in 303AD in the time of the Christian persecutions under the rule of the Emperor Diocletian. The Roman solder, Gavino, had been ordered to kill a priest and Deacon, Proto and Gianuario, but they converted him to Christianity so for this, Gavino was also killed with them. They are remembered on their feast day, 30th May.
On the north-western side of the island is Alghero, our destination for today. This town was also established by the city state of Genoa in the 12th century. Very impressive old town where we are staying.
Hotel Él Balear.
Drinks on the boardwalk near our hotel
Dinner watching the sunset
Lobster and suckling pig tonight
We are in Alghero for two nights and already I know it will be our favourite town yet.
