We arrived at the port of Palma about 7am. We slept well on the ferry in a quiet seated area. Good value for €35 pp.
Our first impression was the huge silhouette of the cathedral on the foreshore.
More like an imposing fortress than cathedral.
Our hotel was only a short walk from the port and has 24 hour reception. It seems a popular choice.
The hotel’s rooftop terrace with views of the cathedral and the port.
Breakfast in a cafe nearby. Prices considerably higher here.
An early morning stroll around the cathedral precinct. So many photo opportunities- with beautifully maintained buildings with such character. As with so much of Spain a long history including occupation of Romans and Moors.
The cathedral is enormous. It was begun in the 1200s and has some interesting artwork, including a Santa Margarita. Over the main altar there is a huge hanging with lights and figures - bit like a school art project - certainly was a contrast to the very traditional chapels that surrounded it.
Then we wandered through the main shopping and business district - fabulous - high end shops mixed with delicatessens and small local bakeries. Some Gaudí architecture, lots of plazas with cafes. Had a feel of the Isle of Capri - fresh and exciting. And of course, it’s tourist central.
About midday we spied a building that looked like a Spanish mission but it was the local market. This one has impressed us the most of the three cities so far. We even managed to squeeze at the end of one of the tapas stalls and had some lunch.
So many interesting alleyways and plazas. This tree-lined street is called La Rambla like in Barcelona.
A late afternoon meander. Along our alley lovely patios, private and hotel. A drink in a shaded cafe.
We walked back via the cathedral/ castle grounds, which are just across from our hotel
Dinner next door in a traditional family-run restaurant
