JULY 2019 : DENMARK : DAY 2 : Copenhagen

Breakfast in the hostel cafe. They offer an extensive continental breakfast for 75 kroner.

House rules

10 am we met a group for a free walking tour of major sites

We met in the Town Square at City Hall. This is a statue of ‘tough as nails’ Bishop Absalon, who fortified a village in 1167, which took on the name Komandshavn, which was later condensed to Köbenhavn or Copenhagen.

The Viking soldiers who guarded the city walls, trumpeting loudly if invaders were approaching

Attractive walkways, more and more areas are being closed off to traffic

A cafe and traditional buildings in the Court House precinct

The oldest street in Copenhagen, Magstraede, built in 1520s.

The Stock Exchange with three crocodiles entwined around the tower

The Royal Danish Theatre,  built in 1748

A statue of a King Frederick or a King Christian - they seem to alternate

An old telephone exchange now a trendy bar

Nyhavn, the iconic street along the canal

The entrance to the Amalienborg Palace

The Royal residences. The courtyard is always open to the public as the royal family want to be seen as accessible to all. The flag was up but no sign of Mary, Frederick and the kids.

The palace guards

The Marble Church used as the Royal chapel

Across the river from the royal palaces is the new Opera House, donated by a shipping magnate, which has been nicknamed as ‘the toaster’.

Our tour finished in the Amalie Garden, near the palaces

We found a healthy sandwich/salad cafe for lunch, Fredco’s Deli, close to Nyhavn

We returned to the hostel to discover that Mark’s bag has been found and will be dropped off to us tonight. Hans, our Danish walking friend, has contacted us to say he will drive us to Stege, the beginning of our walk, on Wednesday, which is incredibly kind of him as he is still working..

It’s raining. So Copenhagen. We found a popular Italian restaurant, around the corner. A delicious meal. We tried not to count the cost and just enjoy it.

A spectacular Spaghetti Marinara for Mark

Tomorrow a boat and foodie tour of Copenhagen.

We have our wet weather gear at the ready.
