Our final day on the Dampier Peninsular. We explored more of Cygnet Bay and the northern tip, Cape Leveque.
Waking up in the campsite
An early appointment with Terry, whose family has been involved in the pearling industry for 3 generations.
He pulled open a 3 year old pearl shell.
The pearl is exposed, developed from a tiny core inserted 3 years ago. A tiny crab just below the shell helps to clean and stimulates the process.
The pearl in the giant pearl shell, previously collected for the huge button market in the 1940s and 50s.
Tiny natural seed pearls in the oyster flesh
Fully grown seed pearls
After the tour we went to the east coast of Cape Leveque
Beautiful beach
Safe for swimming, although saltwater crocodiles are seen in the area
The quirky general store
We walked along a path up past the lighthouse to the western side of the cape
Warning signs about taipans and some bush trucker information
Bushtucker?
Lunch in the shade overlooking the sacred site cliffs on the western beach
The glowing red cliffs and crystal clear sea
Back on the Pindan Highway
A night at the Kimberley Traveller’s Lodge - another backpackers but a considerable improvement on the Kimberley Klub.
Another spectacular sunset
