A really special day today, although we were on the road for most of the day. Luke punctuated the drive with some fascinating stopovers. Storm started the day with serving damper for breakfast - his first attempt at cooking fresh dough in the burning ashes. It was a work in progress for the next few days.
High clouds this morning in interesting patterns
Just before we headed towards Wyndham, Luke took a short detour to the picturesque Gibb River to show off the prolific bird life.
Several sulphur-crested cockatoos
A blue-wing kookaburra
Double-barred finches
An ibis
Brown honey-eaters
An inquisitive calf
Back on the road and a lone cyclist braving this dangerous corrugated highway
We had heard of the Ellenbrae Cattle Station and their legendary scones for the last few days. We were delighted when we arrived there today. It is now owned by the Grollo millionaire developers. It was planted with tropical trees and lawns established by former owners. Although it still stocks cattle, they roam freely and are only rounded up and sold irregularly. Their main income is from the cafe and the 40,000 scones they sell each year.
There was an exhibition in the small homestead of paintings by David Byard which I loved.
On the road again and this is our first view of the MAGNIFICENT Cockburn Range
The large Pentecost River
Lunch at a look-out, hiding from the multitude of tiny flies
A quintessential shot of the Kimberley landscape red rock and boab trees
Entering the large El Questro station
Our established camp at El Questro
Fabulous facilities at the El Questro camping ground including a pub with entertainment. The bathrooms were a multitude of single cubicles with a shower and toilet. Very civilised.
