OCTOBER 2018 : ITALY : VIA DI FRANCESCO : DAY 23 : Piediluco - Poggio Bustone - bus and train

,

This section is also marked as HARD and 8 hours duration, so we had another creative day with Italian public transport, which I must say is very efficient. Here below is what rome2rio suggested for us today.

Sunrise over the lake at Piediluco.

Breakfast included

We were ready for the 8.30 bus
(Piediluco to Marmore by bus)

The bus narrowly squeezes through the tiny streets, sometimes forcing cars to reverse or beeping for cars to be moved.

The train station at Marmore - another potential film set
(Marmore to Rieti by train)

In Rieti we had a snack, waiting in the little park outside the station

The salubrious bus station in Rieti
(Rieti to Poggio Bustone by bus)

A half hour drive up and down mountain villages

We were dropped off at the top of Poggio Bustone at the Sanctuario.
This is one of the four main Franciscan sanctuaries. Here St Francis had several spiritual experiences which changed his ministry.

Walking down to the town

Our accommodation was just at the top of the town through the Porta del Buongiorno.

.

We waited for our key, aided by helpful locals who contacted the owner

It is a small apartment in a small square with amazing views
La Casetta dei Desideri - €50 - breakfast provided

The laneways are steep and irregular

A challenge to Mark’s knees

A fountain on a war memorial as we explored the town - trying to find something somewhere to eat

Stones on roofs to protect tiles from severe weather.

Sunset

Secret men’s business

Dinner at Locanda de Francesco

With Hans, Ingelise, Petra and Maria
Maria and Petra are from Bavaria and walked Florence to Assisi in May 2017, which they said was a beautiful time of year for this walk, and now are completing the last section.

Feliciano, our host and owner of several apartments where the others stayed.

Catharina, the chef, and Feliciano’s mother

It should be a spectacular walk tomorrow along this valley to Rieti.

You need to be a mountain goat to live in Poggio Bustone! Good those knees are holding up.
