OCTOBER 2017 : SPAIN : SAN FERNANDO TO TARIFA : DAY 7

Sergio and Claudia very kindly drove us to Tarifa today. An hour and a half drive to the most southern most tip of Continental Europe. There many wind farms along the highway, taking advantage of the strong and regular winds which are characteristic of this area.

Fifteen kilometres from Tarifa is the town of Bolonia, which is renown for the Roman town, Baelo Claudia, which has been excavated nearby. It was developed in 2nd century BC under the emperor Augustus. It was developed on the traditional Roman urban planning model. It thrived under the rule of Emperor Claudius (41-45AD) when it was an  important port servicing the trade routes of Europe and North Africa. It had a fish salting factory, which produced ‘garum’, a fish paste, popular throughout the Roman Empire.

An extensive site by the coast, with well-excavated buildings, giving a realistic idea of  the original town’s appearance.

A surprise visitor.

Winds fuel the many wind farms and also attract hundreds of surfers to the Costa de la Luz, where kite surfing is very popular. Mark took this blurry shot from the car. There were literally a hundred keen kite surfers.

The Puerta de Jerez, the entrance to the old city centre of Tarifa.

The city walls constructed from the tenth century after the Islamic conquest.

Walking down towards the port.

A delicious seafood lunch.

Tomorrow we catch the early morning ferry and travel to Morocco..., tonight we are staying at another budget hotel, Hostal Tarifa, 55€ - central, clean and again perfect for our needs.
