JUNE 2014 : EASTERN EUROPE : Slovenian walk : Day 8 : Tomaj - Trieste (4 hours walk and 10 min bus ride)

Day 8 : Tomaj to Trieste (4 hour walk to Opicina and 10 min bus to Trieste city centre)

Weather : fine, hot, 25o

Our last day. Summer Solstice and our 39th wedding anniversary. A perfect morning clear and fine with an excellent view of our route towards the south- west to the coast of Italy. We were on woodland paths most of the way, walking through a few small villages, crossing over the border and finally up to the church in Repentabor which is on the border of Slovenia and Italy. Very appropriate as from this vantage point you can see the Italian coast to the west and back to Tomaj to the east. From the outskirts of Trieste we caught a bus to the city centre, as prescribed by our instructions. Tonight we are staying at a small hotel, Hotel Colombia.

Another delicious breakfast with all homegrown products

Leaving the village of Tomaj

Mainly walking on woodland tracks today

Our first sight of the tower and church of the village of Repentabor on the border of Slovenia and Italy

A steep climb to the top of the hill

The church was all prepared for a wedding. Beautifully set up and a trio playing for the couple.

View back to Mt Nanos and Tomaj to the north from where we'd come

The view towards Trieste, our first glimpse of the Adriatic Coast

The Slovenian/ Italian border. There is a small community of Slovenians living in Repentabor

This is an ancient ice hole. Ice was brought from Mt Nanos and stored in these holes and transported to parts of Italy and even to parts of Egypt.

Under and over railway lines, through forests - spied another young deer

A very unflattering photo of a very happy traveller on the bus from Opicia to Trieste (10 mins)

Coming into Trieste

Hotel Colombia. A good 3 star hotel B&B

Drinks and dinner with the milling crowd in Trieste on a balmy summer evening.

Pleased with our efforts, delighted with all aspects of our walk and now Slovenia holds a special place ifor us. We will definitely return and highly recommend experiencing all it has to offer. I am particularly sad that it is over.

Thanks M & M - its been lovely traveling with you in this very special place. Happy Anniversary - much milder than that cold Canberra day 39 years ago! Love from Tascott

We have enjoyed following your trip through Slovenia. We did this walk in May 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Your photos brought back very happy memories. While you were there we were following up last year's trip with the 'OnFoot' walk in Istria which was equally enjoyable.
Living in Northern Ireland we also enjoyed reading about your recent travels in Kerry. R&M

Thanks, Roy, for your feedback. We will definitely travel with On Foot again - maybe the French Alps next time. Would you recommend Istria?

The Istria walk is interesting, in particular the hilltop villages of Motovun and Hum. However it only has 4 walking days with two nights on the coast. At least two extra nights at the 'add on' in Fazana is essential, a fabulous little hotel.
We did the Maritimes Alpes walk 2 years ago. I would highly recommend this also. In September we are doing the Sabine Hills in Italy, our 5th OnFoot walk!

Sabine walk sounds great. In 2008 we walked part of the Via Francigena pilgrim trail, walking from Lake Geneva to Rome. It took us 5 weeks. We stayed in a range of accommodation, including monasteries, nunneries , the Vincent de Paul sisters in Siena, as well as hotels. Fabulous countryside and experiences. The Italian government has been promoting this walk, extending the range of accommodation available and improving the trail. Have a wonderful trip.
