MAY 2014 : NEPAL : DAY 18 : Bamboo Hotel (2400m) - Syabrubesi (1600m)

Day 18 : Bamboo Hotel to Syabrubesi

Porters up early ready for their last day

So much warmer now that we are descending down the valley. It is about 25o, quite a contrast to the 3 and 4 degrees of earlier in the week. All had excellent sleeps in this interesting riverside hotel.

We set off at 7.30am to avoid the heat of the day. Again we seemed to be the only group travelling west uwith many porters and trekkers heading up towards Langtang. It was not an easy track with many rocky ascents and slippery descents and it became very dusty. We were fortunate to see a large group of monkeys scampering up the other side of the river.

                                                Entering Syabrubesi
We had periodic rests tea house courtyards but made it in good time to Syabrubesi 11.30, where we were delighted to find our accommodation, Hotel Sky. Most of us have ensuite rooms - western toilets and showers - unfortunately not all facilities work. We are in the centre of the small town and it is a convenient place to finish our journey.

Syabrubesi is the terminal town for trekkers to walk in the Langtang Valley. It consists of a Buddhist monastery, a basic boarding and day school for children who live up the valley. There is a bank and several trekker lodges and shops for the locals. It is not a large tourist centre but has a regular bus service to Kathmandu and other smaller towns. We've had a very enjoyable time watching the comings and goings down the main thoroughfare from the balcony and courtyard of our simple hotel.

A special dinner tonight where we shared the meal with the 19 porters and other staff. Dancing, singing and much merriment. A fitting ending to a very special holiday. Through the extreme activities and temperatures we have bonded with this friendly group of people, who have provided services beyond the call of duty.
