SEPTEMBER 2016 : IRELAND : Dublin - Cork

Very impressive Irish Rail. We had pre-booked seats and you simply print them off at the regular ticket machine, entering your reference number.

Racks of rentable bikes around the city. Many commuters take their collapsible bikes on the train or jump on a rented bike outside the station.

Very efficient system. On time. Clean and spacious. Our names were up on a tiny screen above our seats as we had reserved on line. Wifi the whole way.

            Cattle farming country.

Our B&B Garnish House on the outskirts of the city.

Tea and scones to welcome guests.

We are across the road from the historic University College Cork. 1845.

View of Cork (by Nathaniel Grogan) in 1780.

Cork today. The River Lee still gives shape to the city. A big working class town.

Buildings with character along the river, a working port.

        Irish folk music entertaining shoppers

The English (fresh food) Market. We had some seafood chowder and cheese plate at a small cafe.

Then the rain set in..out came our wet weather gear - a typical Irish day...

We only had a chance to get a taste of Cork today, limited by the weather and our time of arrival. We have had to transition through Cork on our way to the small town of Glengarriff, the start of our Beara Peninsular walk, where we travel to tomorrow.

We are staying in the B&B / hotel district but found a friendly pub not too far along the river tributary.

Classic atmosphere and menu - Irish Stew.

         Walking home at twilight.
