JULY 2015 : SPAIN : El Camino del Norte : Day 24 : Luarca - Navia (22 kms - 5 and a half hours)

      Distance travelled : 561 kms
Distance to go : 268 kms

The decision today was to either walk 22 kms or 30 kms, so with the benefit of spare days, we walked to Navia, the shorter distance. It was a cloudy day with cool winds, perfect for walking. The scenery has changed the apple orchards have been replaced with acres of corn. We still have the coast in the visible distance.

We left Luarca and French friends we have shared accommodation with for the last three nights. The fellow in red walked out from his home in Le Mans and walked to Spain and has been joined at various stages by his wife and friends. After Santiago he will walk the reverse Camino Frances, heading home via Bordeaux. 5 months.

We climbed up from the port at Luarca and found some dairy and granary factories.

A tenth century church and cemetery, with significance for early pilgrim times. This was replaced
In the1920s closer to town due to an epidemic.

             Cornfields abound.

Excellent paths, skirting the highway with views of the coast.

             Under motorways...

Locals have provided fountains, rest areas and tributes to the Camino.

Lots of activity in fields as we pass.

         First rest point at Villapedre.

WIFI with an easy password to remember.

            Navia. A market town.

            And a surprisingly large port.

Pension Cantabrico, excellent value at 40 euros for a double room.

Great value, beautifully presented and the receptionist has booked our accommodation
for tomorrow at our next destination. We plan to do this regularly. Staff seem more than
happy to recommend and book accommodation for the busier centres.

Lots of activity at the bar/ restaurant  next door so we followed the crowds and enjoyed a
filling lunch. Menu del Dia - three courses for 8 euros including wine.

A rainy afternoon down by the port.

Warm and sociable in the bar next door.
