JULY 2015 : SPAIN : El Camino del Norte : Day 14 : Comillas - Unquera (24 kms - 9 hours with stops)

Distance walked so far : 294 kms
Distance to go : 518 kms

Divorce on the Camino continues! A long hot day on hard surfaces. Day 13 and a blister - drat! Solid walking sandals at the ready to compensate! Lots of highlights though. Great vistas of the coast and the Picos de Europa mountains and an unexpected haven for lunch and a perfect accommodation at the end of the day. All is forgiven.

Leaving Comillas after a great breakfast at Bar Filipinas we set off through this special town.

It warmed up quickly, probably in the high twenties.

We passed through a few hamlets and one with this small hermitage with unusual bell tower. Ring my chimes!

We passed through an immaculate private golf course with some challenging greens. We were surprised that they would let the riffraff through.

Gorgeous coast with beckoning beach...

Views of the Picos de Europa mountains.

We ran into the Aussie family, the Capenays, now based in Southern Spain to enable more travel.

The first view of San Vincente de la Barquera. This is a fishing and resort town with an 8th century castle. The castle and the 13th century Gothic church of Santa Maria de Los Angeles dominate the skyline.

Our friends have hightailed it to Llanes while we ascended into the hills with impressive views of San Vincente.

A rare tribute to the Camino with provision for messages - I was hoping it was to facilitate heavenly intervention but it was to contact other pelegrinos.

The best part of the day was in Serdio. Fabulous bar and staff. Multitude of salads on the menu, good smooth music and some helpful advice about accommocation in upcoming towns. The maitre d' informed us that the Colombres Albergue was booked for children's camps for the summer so we could adjust our plans. (Albergue La Gloria recommended here)

Lots of fuentes (fountains) with potable water along the route.

Another pelegrino taking a nap in the heat of the day.

We crossed the Rio Tina Menor.

Along soft paths avoiding the motorway.

By the railway line, shady paths.

Then we arrived in Unquera. Not much information in the guidebook. It looks like a service town on the lovely Deva River with lots of cafes and perfect for an overnight stay.

We are staying at the Rio Deva hostal. 26 euros for a double.

With bath...
