JULY 2015 : SPAIN : El Camino del Norte : Day 13 : Santillana del Mar - Comillas (21 kms - 5 and a half hours)

Distance walked so far : 270 kms
Distance to go : 542 kms

We were able to have breakfast at the Albergue for 4 euros - juice, toast and a big bowl of
coffee. It was cool as we set off at 7.30. Julie and Bob preferring a rest day.

Stylish shells marked our way out of the main plaza.

Mainly walked on minor roads with vistas of the path ahead.

Large church with a spectacular view to the coast at Orena.

An enterprising local with s much appreciated pop-up cafe and rest stop.

Friendly children call out greetings as we pass.

There were several small villages down country lanes all with their ancient church or
hermitage (one was from the 9th century).

One contrast was the nineteenth century baroque church of San Martin in San Martin de
Ciguenza. A pilgrim sculpture at the rear. This was on an alternative route, more direct and less
           hilly than the traditional way.

Mark thinks this might be a formal of royal tennis - a combination of squash and tennis,
played with a strong bat and tennis ball.

The beach our first impression of the town. Popular today although quite chilly and overcast.

Our pension, 30 euros a double, is above a local restaurant. Clean and convenient.

We ate at the restaurant for lunch which included a local dish of mountain stew,
thick and delicious, very much like the French cassoulet.

In the late nineteenth century the wealthy Marquis de Comillas (rich from the slave trade). He
commissioned Antonio Gaudi to build a summerhouse. This stunning structure is known as
        The Capricho.

        Interesting garden.

            Comfortable and innovative furniture.

Wrought iron window seats incorporated into the balconies.

Colourful buildings in the old part of town.

The Palacio de Sobrellano also built by the Marquis of Comillas with some Gaudi
              Inclusions.

Fiesta time in Comillas with music, food stalls and fun activities throughout the town.

But we are off for an early night and a good night's sleep.
