JULY 2015 : SPAIN : El Camino del Norte : Day 18 : Colunga - Villaviciosa ( 19 kms - 5 hours )

Distance walked so far : 390 kms
Distance to go : 422 kms

A mixed day today with some road walking, paths and climbs in humid weather. 33o when we arrived in Villavicosia.

Leaving Corlunga after breakfast at a busy bar in the Main Street. Lots of pelegrinos, either travelling solo or with a tour.

The skyline as we left the town and entered into farmland and onto minor roads.

A few climbs, made more uncomfortable with the increasing humidity.

First time we have seen Backpack Transport advertised on this route. We used it for a few days when we had some long distances in France in 2012.

You never know where you'll end up.

            A passing traveller.

Early morning bread deliveries to farmhouses (in plastic bag)

In Priesca there is the pre- Romanesque church of San Salvador built in 921.

Some excellent shaded paths to contrast the exposed road sections.

A horreo in use after a successful corn crop harvest.

Crossing small streams on ancient bridges - crystal clear water.

We expected to find a substantial settlement in Sebrayo but there was only an albergue and a few houses. We were disappointed with the lack of opportunities for refreshments in this section, being so hot.

Only a few kilometres on, a hospitable farmer has set up a shelter with shade, microwave, sink and
a vending machine. I, inadvertently, chose a can of San Miguel beer (no alcohol) and lemon. Such a welcome surprise and appreciated. Lots of grateful walkers had added messages on the blackboards.

Our first sight of Villaviciosa on an inlet on the Ria de Villaviciosa.

Quite a long walk into the centre of town. Unremarkable at first.

A lovely park as you enter the town with a marvellous sculpture of apples - the symbol of the town - as it is the apple centre of Spain, much of which go into the local cider.

The older part of the town has some impressive buildings dating back to the sixteenth century.

We are staying at the Albergue Hostel Villaviciosa. A double room, with bathroom for 32 euros.

We had a late lunch at a local cafe, selecting the Menu del Dia, which included a fish main course,Rays, which Bob and I selected - little realising it was a filet of manta ray in a tomato sauce!

Santa Maria La Oliva. A simply decorated Romanesque church of the thirteenth century.

A blast of sound  - and we were drawn to the forecourt in front of the Mayoral building and the local Celtic band was playing and began parading through the streets.

Many of the bandmembers were in provincial dress. It was very rousing and definitely added some unexpected excitement to the evening.

The local marching band is obviously carrying on the long music tradition in the area.

A cool drink at a local cafe amidst the remnants of a wedding party and band members cooling off after their performance.
